About the symposium

The 2nd International Symposium “Veltinis 2002” has been organised from August 24 to September 4, 2002 and took place in the City of Vilnius. The 2nd Symposium “Felt 2002” was named: “Traditions of various nations as reflected in modern creation of young artists”.

There are plans to continue the international symposium project for the purpose of modern textile art promotion, sharing of experience, exchange of informational and materials, and arrange shows of textile art in various cities of Lithuania and abroad.

Felt technique has been well known since the beginning of the world history and it has been widely used in traditional textile. In Lithuania, however, we do discover it again. This technique has already managed to fortify itself in the professional textile of Lithuania.

In addition to creative activities the participants of the symposium are doing the presentations of traditional and modern culture of their countries, are including the slide lectures and reports on urgent art issues. Also the demonstrations of individual techniques acquainting everyone with wide possibilities for felt applications.

Participants: The organisers of the Symposium have invited 17 artists from 3 countries (Latvia, Lithuania, and Scotland): group “Baltos kandys” (“White Moths”) (LT): Austė Jurgelionytė, Karolina Kunčinaitė, Miglė Lebednykaitė, Rasa Leonavičiūtė, Laura Pavilonytė, Julija Vosyliūtė; Žilvinas Balkeviius (LT), Eglė Ganda Bogdanienė (LT), Vladas Daškevičius (LT), Keta Gutmane (Latvia), Kathleen Macneish (Scotland), Kęstutis Lanauskas (LT), Dāvis Licitis (Latvia), Kaspars Lielgalvis (Latvia), Jeanette Sendler (Scotland), Žydrutė Ridulyte (LT), Krists Zankovskis (Latvia).

The Symposium has been completed with the exhibition of works generated during the Symposium. The show has been opened in the “Academy “ Gallery in Vilnius on September 3, 2002. And later has been continued in various cities of Lithuania: “Arch” Gallery in Vilnius, Guild of textile artists in Kaunas, J. Monkutė-Marx Museum-Gallery in Kėdainiai, Civic Art Gallery in Panevežys.

Organisers: The Symposium “Felt 2002“ has been organised by the Artists’ Group “White Moths” in co-operation with the Vilnius Fine Arts Academy and the A & A. Tamošaitis Gallery “Židinys”.
